A tranquil spot by the Mandakini river

Janaki Kund, situated approximately 2 km from the famous Ram Ghat in Chitrakoot, Uttar Pradesh, is a serene reservoir named after Goddess Sita, also known as Janki. This sacred spot, surrounded by lush greenery and by the tranquil Pramod Van, offers a peaceful retreat by the banks of the Mandakini River. The presence of the forest across the river adds to the tranquility, making Janaki Kund a perfect setting for reflection and spiritual rejuvenation.

Rooted in mythology and reverence

The site is deeply revered due to its mythological significance as the bathing place of Goddess Sita during her exile with Lord Rama and his brother Lakshman. This historical association lends a profound spiritual dimension to Janaki Kund, where devotees believe the waters hold purifying powers. Nearby, the small yet significant temple contains footprints believed to be those of Sita, further enhancing the site's sacred nature. Two other temples, the Sankat Mochan Hanuman Temple and Shree Raghuvir Temple, are located just behind the Kund, adding to its religious importance.

Still waters run deep

The beauty of Janaki Kund lies in its serene setting and the crystal-clear waters of the reservoir. Visitors are often captivated by the stillness and clarity of the water, which reflects the surrounding foliage and sky. The area is meticulously maintained, preserving its cleanliness and the meditative calm that pervades the atmosphere. The gentle sound of the flowing river complements the silence, interrupted only by the occasional rustle of leaves or the soft prayers of pilgrims.
