A Legacy Preserved Through Time

The efforts of the last Nizam of Hyderabad to preserve the history and heritage of the state are paying off now in the form of this wondrous museum. Located at Public Gardens, Nampally, the Telangana State Archaeology Museum is the oldest museum in the city of Hyderabad. Thanks to the visionary Nizam who created the Department of Archaeology in the year 1915, we now have artefacts that date back centuries. After conducting many excavations, the department is credited with the preservation of historically significant monuments. The museum also displays Hindu, Jain and Buddhist sculptures, bronze relics and paintings dating back as far back as the Chalukya and Vijayanagara periods. While the main attraction is a mummy that has been preserved for more than 2350 years, this place houses many other noteworthy pieces including a copy of the Holy Quran with a seal by Shahjahan, the Mughal emperor. From stone sculptures to modern paintings to bronze works to manuscripts to different kinds of textiles, the Telangana State Archaeology Museum displays a variety of items of historical interest catering to visitors with varied tastes.
