Walk through meticulously reconstructed traditional houses that showcase the architectural abilities and the cultural richness of the communities that lived in these houses. You will be amazed by the skill of the master craftsmen as they went about building simple houses that lasted several lifetimes.

A beautiful reminder of the past

Dakshinachitra Heritage Museum welcomes tourists on a cultural journey through South India's past. Within its grounds, there are about 18 historic houses showcasing different aspects of art, craft, lifestyle, culture, architecture, and performing arts, each with their own exhibition.

Visitors to the Kanchipuram weaver’s house will discover exquisite wood carvings crafted by hand and intricate handwoven silks. The museum's true gem lies in its meticulous reconstructions of traditional houses from different regions across South India, offering visitors an insight into its varied architectural styles and the culture and traditions of the various communities that lived in these houses. Dakshinachitra provides more than static displays; visitors can experience dynamic cultural encounters at this museum through exhibitions, hands-on classes, textile workshops, and captivating performances by emerging artists. Craft bazaars serve as an arena for artisans, craftsmen, and NGOs from across India to showcase their remarkable creations.

Established in 1996, this cultural haven is dedicated to preserving and promoting South India's rich art and craft traditions. Visitors are welcome to take part in immersive tours as well as educational programs designed to further understand this cultural legacy.
