The origin of this temple is said to lie in a legend. Once upon a time, two powerful demons named Sumba and Nisumba found sanctuary here. The demons were trouble-makers, who caused havoc in the world, so the devas went to Shiva for help. That’s when the goddess Parvati manifested as the formidable Bhadra Kali. She defeated the demons easily, but her fury did not abate. In an attempt to calm her down, Shiva challenged her to a dance competition and won. He then decreed that all his followers would first express their reverence to her before seeking his blessings at this sacred space.

The historical records of the Vadaranyeswarar Templetemple tell the story of the saint Karaikkal Ammaiyar, one of the 63 Nayanmars, who is believed  to have engaged in a remarkable act of devotion by traversing the temple grounds in an inverted position, all in order to see the celestial dance of Lord Shiva. The culmination of her act was marked by the creation of the song "Mootha ThiruPathigam," and she is said to have achieved salvation here . A bronze figure of Nataraja, dated to the first century CE was found here, and is currently preserved in the Chennai Government Museum.
