The oldest monastery in Sikkim

Perched at an elevation of 2,100 meters lies the oldest monastery of Sikkim, the magnificent Dubdi Monastery.

Meaning "retreat" in the local dialect, the Dubdi Monastery perfectly embodies its tranquil setting in the Himalayas, earning its moniker as the Hermit's Cell.

Steeped in the rich traditions of the Nyingma sect of Tibetan Buddhism, this hallowed shrine was established in 1701 and emerged as a cornerstone of Yuksum State's foundation. For this reason, it is also known as the Yuksom Monastery.

When you enter this two-storeyed stone structure, its intricately painted interior with divine images and sacred manuscripts from around the world will amaze you. Then, there are the monastery's halls, where you will discover statues of Lhatsun Chenpo and his two associate lamas, who played key roles in the monastery's establishment. You will discover rare collections of carefully preserved manuscripts and religious texts along the corridors.

It is no surprise then that Dubdi Monastery holds profound spiritual significance as an integral stop along the pilgrimage circuit that includes Pemayangtse Monastery, Sanga Choling Monastery, Khecheopalri Lake, and Tashiding Monastery, offering pilgrims a transformative journey of reverence and reflection.

Of spectacular views and mesmerising celebrations

Dubdi Monastery offers a breathtaking panoramic view, surrounded by the beautiful cupressus funebris, a type of cypress that Latshen Chem Po brought from Kham village in Tibet. You can also get a spectacular view of Mt. Kanchenjunga, the world's third-highest peak, making for an unparalleled experience.

Speaking of great experiences, the annual festival at Dubdi Monastery is a sight to behold, attracting Buddhist followers from far and wide to enjoy the vibrant ritual celebrations. It's an opportunity to immerse in Buddhist traditions and witness the age-old rituals.
