A window to the royal past of Jodhpur

Ever wonder about the rich cultural legacy that has defined Jodhpur through the ages? If so, a treasure trove of the blue city's heritage awaits discovery in the city's heart within an architectural marvel.

Nestled within the lush embrace of the garden of Ummed Bagh, alongside a public library and zoo, the Sardar Government Museum stands as a shining beacon that illuminates the rich cultural legacy of Jodhpur.

Welcome to the magnificent Sardar Government Museum, a famed repository that contains the region's profound artistic and historical legacy.

Commissioned by Maharaja Ummed Singh, the grand museum houses an unparalleled collection of artefacts that take you on a journey through the lives of the bygone royal era, from the gleam of exquisite weaponry to the delicate brushstrokes of revered miniature paintings and more.

Let's explore further and learn more about the gems stored inside the walls of this museum.

Historic origins

The origins of this beautiful museum date back to 1909 when, on the orders of Maharaja Ummed Singh, it was brought to life by a renowned Edwardian architect, Henry Vaughan Lanchester. Fittingly, the museum was named in honour of Maharaja Sardar Singh, whose own distinguished lineage had long shaped the destiny of this regal city.

After the museum's construction, it lay dormant for nearly three decades as its doors were closed. But in 1936, the Sardar Government Museum finally opened its doors, inviting the curious and the discerning to embark on a journey through the annals of Jodhpur's storied past.

Let's take a tour

From the whispers of the 6th century to the echoes of the modern era, the museum invites you on a journey of discovery that spans across the museum's four distinct sections including the archaeological area, the armoury, the display of arts and crafts, and the historical section.

Your exploration begins with a glimpse into the region's historic soul. Archaeological treasures, like fragments from a forgotten time, hint at the stories waiting to be unravelled. Here, you can also witness historic inscriptions, and ancient coins.

As you delve deeper, the museum unveils a breathtaking display of weaponry including models of military planes and battleships. Gleaming suits of armour testify to the fierce warrior traditions of Jodhpur's former rulers. But there are more than the instruments of war here. Right alongside them lies a fascinating display of artistic treasures. Delicate miniature paintings, stunning metalwork, and intricate textiles showcase the region's enduring love for creative expression.

Experience Rajasthan's vibrant culture through the museum's engaging events. From music and dance performances to art exhibitions and lectures, the museum calendar offers a window into the region's rich heritage. Check their schedule and plan your visit to experience Rajasthan's cultural heritage firsthand.
