Incredible legends of the temple
The Omkareshwar Temple is one of the two principal sanctuaries dedicated to Lord Shiva in Jalgaon, the other being the Amareshwar, gracing the southern bank of the majestic Narmada River. Legend has it that the powerful Vindya, god of the Vindhyachal mountain range, longed to win Shiva's favour and sought redemption for his past misdeeds. In a fervent bid for atonement, he meticulously crafted a sacred geometric design and fashioned a Lingam from sand and mud.
Shiva, moved by this sincere act of worship, manifested himself in dual forms as Omkareshwar and Amaleswara. The magical transformation of a mud hill into the sacred symbol "Om" led to the island being revered as Omkareshwar. As you explore the temple’s complex, you’ll also encounter a beautiful shrine dedicated to Parvati and the five-faced Ganapati.
