The Landscape
Madhai sits where the Tawa reservoir's backwaters, formed by a dam on the Tawa river, and the Denwa river converge with the Satpura and Bori forests. Getting into the park's core from Madhai typically starts with a boat crossing of the Denwa river, an experience in itself, with crocodile sightings and grazing sambar herds visible from the water before the safari even begins on land.

Best Time to Visit
October to March for cooler, more comfortable river crossings and safaris; the monsoon transforms the surrounding countryside into a lush green escape but closes the reserve to tourism from around July to September.

By Rail: The nearest major railway station is Itarsi Junction (ET), located approximately 70 km from Madhai. As one of Central India's most important rail hubs, Itarsi is well connected to major cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Bhopal. Taxis and private transfers are readily available for onward travel to Madhai.
By Air: The nearest airport is Raja Bhoj Airport, Bhopal (BHO), situated approximately 140–150 km from Madhai. The airport offers regular connections to major Indian cities, and visitors can hire taxis for the onward journey to Satpura Tiger Reserve.
By Road: Madhai is located approximately 25 km from Narmadapuram (Hoshangabad) and is easily accessible by road from Narmadapuram, Itarsi, Bhopal, and Pachmarhi. Private taxis are the most convenient option for reaching the reserve.
