A place of historical significance
Jama Masjid Leh is a place of immense historical value and boasts many remarkable features. Situated at the centre of Leh, it is not only one of Ladakh's oldest but also largest mosques; construction dates back to late 17th century when Deldan Namgyal, then ruler of Ladakh at that time, signed an accord with Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb to provide protection to Ladakhi Kings in exchange for payment; in return they agreed to protect Jama Masjid as a symbol of their partnership — becoming symbolised through this alliance ed by an agreement signed between Deldan Namgyal and Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb and Emperor Aurangzeb; Jama Masjid was constructed as a result of this accord and became known as one of Leh's landmark features — its size alone stands out among its many remarkable characteristics!
Today, the Jama Masjid proudly stands in Leh's Main Bazaar exuding an aura of grandeur and spirituality. Though now accessible exclusively to male visitors, its significance and architectural splendour remain universally appreciated.
