The Doorway to Panipat’s Glorious Past

In the bustling heart of Panipat, where modern markets hum with life and the aroma of street food mingles with the chatter of traders, stands a silent sentinel of history—the Bab-i-Faiz Gate. Known locally as Salarganj Gate, this imposing structure is more than just bricks and mortar; it is a doorway to an era when Panipat was a strategic stronghold and a cultural melting pot.

Bab-i-Faiz Gate – The Doorway to Panipat’s Glorious Past

In the bustling heart of Panipat, where modern markets hum with life and the aroma of street food mingles with the chatter of traders, stands a silent sentinel of history—the Bab-i-Faiz Gate. Known locally as Salarganj Gate, this imposing structure is more than just bricks and mortar; it is a doorway to an era when Panipat was a strategic stronghold and a cultural melting pot.

A Gateway Built for Grandeur

Constructed in 1737 AD by Nawab Sadiq, Bab-i-Faiz Gate was once the proud entrance to the historic town of Panipat. Its name, inscribed in elegant Urdu script above the pointed arch, reads “Bab-i-Faiz Nawab Sadiq-1129”, which translates to the “Door of Beneficence”. This inscription still survives, whispering tales of a time when Indo-Islamic architecture flourished under the patronage of noblemen.

The gate’s design is a masterpiece of Mughal-inspired aesthetics. Built with Lakhauri bricks on a sturdy stone foundation, it features a rectangular passage flanked by two arched openings at either end. The outer face boasts multi-foliated arches, adorned with decorative panels and arched recesses, while the inner arches are elegantly cased in red sandstone. Above, a battlemented parapet with crenellations crowns the structure, lending it a regal silhouette against the Panipat sky.

From Royal Entrance to Urban Landmark

Centuries ago, Bab-i-Faiz Gate welcomed travelers, traders, and warriors into Panipat—a city that witnessed three decisive battles shaping India’s destiny. Today, it stands amidst the vibrant lanes of Mohalla Salarganj, near the Panipat bus stand, surrounded by shops and homes. Time has changed its purpose, but not its significance. The gate remains under the protection of the Government of India, a cherished relic of Haryana’s architectural heritage.

Stories Etched in Stone

Every brick of Bab-i-Faiz Gate tells a story. Imagine the clatter of horse hooves and the rustle of silk as caravans passed through this archway. Picture soldiers marching under its shadow, their eyes set on the battlefields that would decide empires. This gate has seen it all—the rise and fall of dynasties, the roar of cannons during the Third Battle of Panipat, and the quiet resilience of a town rebuilding itself after war.

Local lore adds another layer of charm. It is said that the gate was not just an entrance but a symbol of prosperity and welcome—a promise of beneficence to those who entered Panipat’s fold.

Architectural Details That Dazzle

For lovers of heritage architecture, Bab-i-Faiz Gate is a visual treat. The multi-fold arches, the stacked niches, and the remnants of balconies (now largely lost) reflect the Indo-Muslim style that dominated the 18th century. Though weathered by time, the gate retains its elegance, standing as a testament to craftsmanship that valued both strength and beauty.
