Gangasagar Mela
Gangasagar Mela is one of the largest pilgrimage fairs in India and an important spiritual gathering held annually at Sagar Island in West Bengal during Makar Sankranti in January. The mela takes place at the sacred confluence of the River Ganga and the Bay of Bengal, where lakhs of pilgrims gather to take a holy dip and offer prayers at the Kapil Muni Temple. It is believed that bathing at Gangasagar during this auspicious occasion washes away sins and brings spiritual blessings. The festival is regarded as the second-largest Hindu religious congregation in India after the Kumbh Mela.
The mela attracts devotees, saints, tourists, and visitors from across India and abroad. Temporary camps, religious discourses, devotional music, cultural activities, and traditional fairs create a vibrant spiritual atmosphere across the island. Rituals such as offering “Arghya” to the Sun God and “Deepdan” (lighting lamps) form an important part of the celebrations.
Gangasagar Mela also plays a significant role in promoting tourism and the local economy of West Bengal. Extensive arrangements for transport, accommodation, sanitation, healthcare, disaster management, and security are organized by the state government to manage the massive inflow of pilgrims. In recent years, the administration has introduced digital initiatives such as QR-enabled identity bands, information systems, and improved crowd management measures to enhance visitor safety and convenience.
