Bathukamma Floral Festival by women in Telangana
Bathukamma is a vibrant, nine-day floral festival celebrated by women in Telangana, India, during the Hindu festival of Navratri. The festival begins on the day of Mahalaya Amavasya (Pitru Amavasya) and concludes on the ninth day, two days before Dussehra.. The festival culminates on Dussehra, two days before which is the "Saddula Bathukamma" or "Pedda Bathukamma". Bathukamma is a unique festival where women create beautiful, stackable flower arrangements called "Bathukammas".
These are adorned with seasonal flowers and culminate in a large, colorful stack that is floated on water bodies. The festival is a celebration of womanhood, nature, and the bounty of the harvest. It honors Goddess Gauri (a form of Goddess Parvati) and thanks her for the abundance of crops and prosperity. The name "Bathukamma" is believed to mean "Mother Goddess, come back to life. The festival involves processions where women carry their Bathukammas, sing folk songs, dance, and participate in other cultural activities. Bathukamma is a state festival of Telangana, representing the spirit of the region.
