The Yamai Devi Yatra is an annual pilgrimage festival held at the ancient hill-top Shree Yamai Devi Temple in Aundh, Khatav taluka, Satara district, Maharashtra. It takes place during the Hindu calendar month of Paush (typically in January), peaking around Shakambhari Pournima with grand chariot processions and thousands of devotees. In Marathi 'Ye Mai' means come mother. The annual pilgrimage to Yamai Devi Temple attracts thousands of devotees. During the festival, a palanquin carries the idol of Devi on a vehicle. This temple is very popular for its historical importance and is also a very sacred temple. Yamai Devi is the kuldevi (Origin) of many Marathi families. Along with the Yamai Devi Temple, the premise also houses the Shree Bhavani Devi Museum, one of the first art museums in India. Yamai represents the combined form of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, and is considered to be a joint incarnation of Goddess Parvati and Goddess Renuka.
The story behind the name of Goddess Yamai:
Once during their exile, when Lord Shree Ram was searching for Goddess Sita, Goddess Parvati came before him disguised as Goddess Sita to test him. However, Lord Ram recognized Goddess Parvati and called out to her, saying, 'Ye Mai' (Oh, Mother). Ever since, this form of Goddess Parvati came to be known as 'Yamai'.
