Narali Pournima Maharashtra

Narali Pournima Celebrated by Hindu fishing communities along Maharashtra’s Konkan coast and Mumbai, Narali Pournima marks a sacred day dedicated to the sea. Held on the full-moon day of the Hindu month of Shravan (around July or August), devotees honour Lord Varuna, the God of oceans and waters, by offering rice, flowers, and coconuts. The day also coincides with Raksha Bandhan, where women tie a protective rakhi on their brothers' wrists.

Coinciding with Raksha Bandhan, this occasion brings a double dose of festivity to families across Maharashtra, Karnataka, Goa, and neighboring states as they honor sibling bonds. While known as Narali Pournima in the Konkan belt, the same auspicious day is celebrated as Avani Avittam in the southern states of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Karnataka, and as Kajri Pournima across northern regions like Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh.

Meaning of Narali Pournima Word:

The name Narali Pournima reflects its core elements: "Narali" translates to coconut, while "Pournima" means full moon.

Key Rituals and Traditions:

·         Fishermen pray to the Sea God for safety, calm waters, and a rich catch.

·         People throw decorated coconuts into the sea as a sacred offering.

·         Families prepare sweet coconut rice (Narali Bhat).

·         Celebrate Raksha Bandhan on this exact day.
