Legacy of the Navgrah Temple
The origins of the fair are closely linked to the historic Navgrah Temple, which is believed to have been established by a ruler of the Peshwa dynasty. It is said that the Peshwa ruler visited the temple annually and interacted with devotees gathering there, leading to the development of a small religious gathering known as the Dhama Mela. Later, the temple was renovated and patronized by the Holkar dynasty, further enhancing its religious and historical importance in the region.
Tradition and Community Celebration
Unlike many fairs that are primarily commercial in nature, the Shri Navgrah Mela is deeply rooted in faith, tradition, and community participation. Every year, devotees from Khargone, the Nimar region, and other parts of the state gather to visit the temple and take part in the festivities. The fair is eagerly awaited by local residents and serves as a vibrant celebration of the region’s cultural heritage, religious traditions, and social unity.
