About the Festival

The Nirjharani Mahotsav is a one-day cultural and spiritual festival organized by the Department of Culture, Government of Madhya Pradesh, at Amarkantak, the sacred birthplace of the holy River Narmada. Celebrated as part of the Narmada Janmotsav, the festival pays tribute to Maa Narmada through a blend of religious ceremonies, cultural traditions, and community participation. The event reflects the deep spiritual significance of the river and the rich heritage of the region.

Traditional Procession & Ritual Ceremonies

A major highlight of the festival is the grand Maa Narmada Shobha Yatra (Procession), featuring vibrant performances by local folk troupes presenting traditional dances such as Gudum, Karma, and Shaila. The celebrations also include Havan, Maha Aarti, Sant Samman (felicitation of saints), Deepdaan, and other devotional activities. These rituals create a spiritually enriching atmosphere and strengthen the cultural connection between the people and the sacred river.

Cultural Performances & Special Attractions

The festival showcases a diverse range of cultural presentations. A special theatrical performance, “Nishadraj Guhaya”, based on the forest-dwelling characters described in the Ramayana, is presented by the Department of Culture, Bhopal. Visitors can also enjoy traditional tribal performances, including Karma and Shaila dances of the Gond tribe and Pardhoni and Karma dances of the Baiga tribe. In addition, the festival features Maa Narmada Aarti, Deepdaan ceremonies, and screenings of films based on the River Narmada, offering a unique cultural and spiritual experience for visitors.
