A distinctive feature of the Chettikulangara Bharani festival is Kuthiyottam, a centuries-old ritual offering dedicated to Goddess Bhagavathy. Regarded as an act of devotion and thanksgiving, the ritual is performed by boys, traditionally between the ages of 8 and 14, who undergo days of spiritual preparation and training before the festival. On the day of the ceremony, the participants, dressed in traditional attire and adorned according to custom, proceed to the temple in a grand ceremonial procession accompanied by rhythmic drum ensembles, devotional music, colourful ceremonial umbrellas, and richly decorated elephants. Along the route, devotees shower them with tender coconut water as a symbolic gesture of blessing and purification. Upon reaching the temple, the boys perform the ritual dance before the sanctum, marking the culmination of their sacred observance.
Another spectacular attraction of the festival is the procession of towering ceremonial structures and decorative effigies representing legendary figures such as Bhima, Panchali, and Hanuman, along with elaborately crafted Theru (ceremonial chariots) and Kuthira (ornamental horses). These magnificent creations are ceremonially brought to the temple and displayed in the paddy fields on the eastern side of the temple complex. After nightfall, the deity is taken in a majestic procession to bless these impressive structures, creating one of the festival's most visually striking moments. The following day, the ceremonial displays return to their respective villages, while a vibrant traditional fair adds to the festive atmosphere.
