About the Temple

Sri Hassanaamba Jatra Mahotsav is one of the annual special Jatra festivals of Karnataka. Once a year, the door of the Hassanaamba Devi Temple is opened and allowed for universal darshan. According to the calendar of each year, the temple is open for 12 days.

The Annual Darshan & Divine Wonders:
Sri Hassanaamba Devi Temple is a religious and cultural landmark of Karnataka. The temple opens its sanctum doors for public darshan only once a year for a limited period. During this time, devotees witness three continuous sacred miracles: the Nanda Deepa (ghee lamp) that stays lit continuously, flowers that remain fresh and unfaded, and warm rice offerings that remain unspoiled for an entire year while the shrine is sealed.

History:
The inscriptions found in this place indicate that the shrine of Sri Siddheshwara and Sri Hassanaamba Devi was founded in the 12th century during the time of Palegar Krishnappa Nayaka and Sanjeeva Nayaka.

It is believed that Sri Hassanaamba is the Shakti Swarupini and according to the place mythology, the Saptha Matras came to Hassan from Varanasi for an air excursion, including the Vaishnavi, Maheshwari and Kaumari deities living around the temple. Similarly, the legend says that Kenjamma and Brahmi Saptha Matras reside in various places of Allur and Hassan.

According to the mythological story, the nature of Goddess Sri Hassanaamba is a symbol of devotion and alliance. In the region, the demon Andhrakasura was a menace to the general public. It is said that Sri Hassanaamba, who came as Shakti Swarupini to suppress him, blessed the province with happiness, peace and tranquility. The carving of the temple is seen as a Dravidian style.
