Every year in November, the historic town of Rampur Bushahr in Himachal Pradesh comes alive with colour, music, culture and celebration during the International Lavi Fair. Held on the banks of the Sutlej River, Lavi is one of Himachal Pradesh’s most renowned traditional fairs and an important part of the cultural heritage of the region.
With its centuries-old connection to Himalayan trade, vibrant markets, traditional handicrafts, folk performances and participation of local communities, the Lavi Fair offers visitors a unique opportunity to experience the living heritage of the Himalayas.
A Legacy Dating Back Centuries
The history of the Lavi Fair is closely associated with the old Indo-Tibetan trade routes. Its origins are traditionally traced to the 17th century, when a trade agreement was established between the erstwhile Bushahr State and Tibet. Rampur's strategic location made it an important centre for trade between the Himalayan regions.
Over the centuries, the nature of trade has changed, but the spirit of Lavi has remained alive. What was once an important trading gathering has evolved into a celebrated cultural, commercial and tourism festival, while retaining its historic identity.
The Colourful Heart of Rampur
During the fair, Rampur becomes a bustling meeting place for traders, artisans, performers, local communities and visitors from across the country. The Lavi Mela Ground is transformed into a vibrant marketplace filled with colourful stalls and traditional products.
Visitors can explore a wide variety of Himachali handicrafts, handloom products, woollens, shawls, traditional garments and locally made articles. The fair also provides an opportunity to discover the rich craftsmanship and traditional skills of Himalayan communities.
The International Lavi Fair is traditionally celebrated in November, with the main fair generally held from 11 to 14 November.
The principal venue is the Lavi Mela Ground, Rampur Bushahr, where visitors can experience the major exhibitions, markets and cultural programmes.
