Goa's biggest and most vibrant spring celebration
The Shigmo Festival, also known as Shigmotsav, is Goa's biggest and most vibrant spring celebration, observed with great enthusiasm across the state during the Hindu month of Phalguna, typically in March and extending into April. Regarded as Goa's traditional Hindu spring harvest and warrior homecoming festival, Shigmo marks the arrival of spring, honours the agricultural roots of Goan communities, and reflects the state's rich cultural heritage, folklore, and rural traditions.
A spectacular highlight of Shigmo is the Chitrarath float parade, featuring elaborate mythological themes, traditional Goan folk dances such as Ghode Modni, Goff, Fugdi, and Rommatamel, vibrant costumes, thunderous drums, live music, and intricately decorated floats. Artists and cultural troupes from across Goa participate in the celebrations, bringing to life stories from Hindu epics like the Ramayana and Mahabharata, local legends, and Goan village traditions through dance and theatrical performances.
