São João Festival
The Sao Joao Festival is one of Goa's most lively and traditional monsoon festivals, celebrated every year on 24th June in honour of St. John the Baptist. Deeply rooted in Goa's Catholic heritage and Portuguese influence, the festival is especially famous in villages such as Siolim, Assagao, and Anjuna, as well as other parts of North Goa. According to Christian belief, St. John the Baptist leaped with joy in his mother's womb upon hearing Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ, greet him, and this spirit of joy and celebration is beautifully reflected in the vibrant festivities of São João.
The most iconic tradition of the festival is people jumping into wells, ponds, and rivers while singing traditional songs and celebrating the arrival of the monsoon season. Young men wear colourful floral crowns known as Kopels, made from fresh flowers and leaves, and participate in boat parades, dancing, music, and festive processions. Villages come alive with traditional Konkani songs, community feasts, local drinks, and cultural performances, creating a joyful atmosphere that warmly welcomes both locals and tourists.
