Chikhal Kalo Festival – Marcel

The Chikhal Kalo Festival is a unique traditional monsoon festival celebrated with great enthusiasm at the historic Shree Devki Krishna Temple in Marcel, Goa. Held annually on the eleventh or twelfth day of the Hindu month of Ashadha,  typically in late June or early July,  the festival joyfully recreates the childhood games of Lord Krishna through vibrant mud-based activities and heartfelt community celebrations.

The name Chikhal Kalo comes from the Konkani words chikhal, meaning mud, and kalo, meaning play, and the festival is beloved by devotees and participants of all ages, immersing themselves in mud-filled grounds, playing traditional games such as chendu fali and gilli danda, as a spirited tribute to the divine playfulness of Lord Krishna.
