SARANGARH DUSSEHRA
is one of the most unique and historic Dussehra celebrations in Chhattisgarh. Its biggest attraction is the tradition of “Garh Vichhedan” or “Garh Chadhai”, in which participants compete to climb a symbolic fort made of mud on the occasion of Vijayadashami. According to the district administration, around 10,000 to 20,000 people attend this event.
📍 Where is Sarangarh?
Sarangarh is the headquarters of Sarangarh-Bilaigarh district. The district came into existence on September 1, 2022. Sarangarh is approximately 201 km from Raipur. Historically, it was a princely state and was ruled by the Gond dynasty.
What is Garh Vichhedan?
The most distinctive tradition of Sarangarh Dussehra is Garh Vichhedan.
On the occasion of Vijayadashami, a cone-shaped mud fort is constructed using soil from the royal palace. Participants then attempt to climb this fort as part of the traditional competition.
While climbing the fort, participants:
- Climb toward the top
- Slip and fall
- Try to climb again
- Struggle to maintain their position
- Sometimes try to stop other participants from reaching the top
The participant who successfully reaches the top of the fort first is honored with a cash prize and a shield.
History of the Tradition
This tradition dates back to the princely-state era and continues to be carried forward by the royal family even today. According to the district administration, in earlier times, people who demonstrated their bravery in this competition were recruited into the king's army.
According to research and local folklore, it is also described as a more than 100-year-old royal tradition. In earlier times, the brave person who successfully conquered the fort was rewarded and honored by the king with cash prizes and recognition.

Being the first person to reach the top of the fort is the biggest attraction of the event.
Historically, the winner was honored for his courage and bravery. Even today, the winner receives a prize and recognition.

Sarangarh Dussehra is not limited to the fort-climbing tradition. Ravana Dahan is also performed here.
According to reports, the effigy of Ravana is burned after the Garh Vichhedan competition.
