Someshwarnath Mahotsav

One of the most important cultural and religious sites in North Bihar is the Someshwarnath Mahotsav, which is situated in the holy city of Areraj, some 28–30 kilometers from Motihari. 

 

This event, which revolves on the historic Someshwar Nath Mahadev Temple, attracts hundreds of thousands of pilgrims from nearby Nepal, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar.

 

Significance of the Mahotsav

The event honors a location rich in mythological and historical significance: 

• Ancient Origins: The 55-foot-tall temple is named for King Som, who built it around 2,000 years ago, according to the Shiva Purana. 

• Divine Legends: Swayambhu (self-manifested) is thought to be the temple's Panchmukhi Shivlingam. According to local legend, Lord Ram and Mata Janaki prayed here on their way back to Ayodhya from Janakpur.

• Second Oldest in Bihar: This temple is regarded as the second oldest in Bihar, after the Mundeshwari Devi temple, following the division of Jharkhand.

Immersive Activities

The Areraj region becomes a center of devotion and traditional art during the Mahotsav: 

• Spiritual Gatherings: During the Shrawani Mela and Mahashivratri, large numbers of devotees take part in Jalabhishek, or the offering of holy water. 

• Cultural Stage: State-level and national musicians play a variety of folk and Bhakti (devotional) music at the festival. 

• Youth & Local Art: Students from nearby schools and universities frequently offer programs focused on cultural topics like Chhath and Ganga Snan, as well as traditional dances like Jhijhiya. 

• Historical Exploration: To add a layer of Mauryan history to their spiritual journey, visitors can also examine the neighboring Ashokan Pillar
