Sher Shah Suri Mahotsav

The Sher Shah Suri Mahotsav, also known as the Shershah Mahotsav, is a major state-level cultural celebration honoring Emperor Sher Shah Suri's heritage that takes place in the ancient city of Sasaram. Every year, the Department of Tourism, Bihar, and the District Administration of Rohtas arrange this colorful celebration to honor the visionary emperor who established the Suri Empire and constructed the famous Grand Trunk Road.

 

Significance of the Mahotsav

The Rohtas district's cultural pride is anchored by the festival: 

• Honoring a Legacy: It honors the life of Sher Shah Suri, a military and administrative prodigy who climbed from Sasaram to become the ruler of northern India. 

• Architectural Pride: Known as the "Second Taj Mahal of India," the majestic Sher Shah Suri Tomb is the focal point of the event. It is an Indo-Islamic masterpiece. 

• Cultural Revival: It provides a distinguished stage for national celebrities and regional folk musicians to present Bihar's rich cultural and musical heritage.

Immersive Activities

Sasaram becomes a center for music, art, and history during the Mahotsav: 

• Grand Musical Evenings: Live performances by well-known performers, including Bollywood and folk-pop concerts and soulful Sufi-rock fusion and Qawwalis. 

• Folk & Heritage Shows: Exhibitions of Bihar's traditional dance styles and plays that vividly depict the Suri dynasty's past. 

• Exhibitions: Stone carvings, regional handicrafts, and historical information about Rohtas' medieval buildings. 

• Historical Walking Tours: Discover the tomb's octagonal shape, elaborate stone jalis, and the tranquil 22-acre man-made lake that encircles the monument with a guide.
