A Fiery Display of Devotion and Victory

The Devaragutta Dussehra, or Banni Festival, in Kurnool District is one of India's most intense and unique celebrations. Its essence lies in a fierce, ritualistic re-enactment of Lord Mala Malleswara Swamy and Goddess Parvathi slaying the demons Mani and Mallasura.

The Devaragutta Dussehra culminates in the climactic Bannu Utsavam, a midnight stick fight on Vijayadashami. Thousands of devotees from rival villages, armed with bamboo sticks, violently clash to claim the deities' idols. This intense event is part of the eleven-day festival, which also includes traditional rituals like the celestial wedding of deities and a symbolic blood offering by the chief priest.

Key Experiences:

  • Dedicated to Sri Mala Malleswara Swamy (Lord Shiva) and Goddess Parvathi.
  • Re-enacts the mythological battle of the deities against demons on Vijayadashami night.
  • Involves a unique ritual where the chief priest symbolically offers blood from his thigh, believed to appease the slain demons.
