Discover a tale of heroism

Diu's history is interwoven with tales of heroism and liberation, such as during the Diu Rebellion in 1961 when India launched military operations against Portuguese colonies, of which Diu was one. Indian forces engaged the Portuguese garrison stationed on the island in battle during the Diu Rebellion. The Diu Museum building served as a hospital, providing care for injured Indian soldiers throughout this conflict.

Legends galore

According to the local legend, the island of Diu contains a secret treasure buried somewhere. When the Portuguese left the island in the 1960s, it is believed that they concealed the treasure. Numerous treasure seekers have attempted to find the treasure over the years because many people think it is buried close to the Diu Museum, but in vain. Another legend is about the Fidalgo family, a well-known Portuguese family that resided on the island of Diu during the colonial period and was cursed. According to this legend, a local saint cursed the family after they desecrated a shrine. The family experienced a string of tragedies because of the curse, including the loss of their wealth and their children's passing. Some people think the curse is still on the island and lingers around the Diu Museum, located in the Fidalgo family's old home.
