Step into a serene sanctuary

Located in the verdant embrace of Sivasagar district’s northern region, the Panidehing Bird Sanctuary beckons with the promise of a tranquil natural experience. Just 22 kilometres from the bustling town of Sivasagar, this hidden gem lies between the gentle flows of the Desang and Demow rivers, spanning a rich wetland ecosystem of 33.93 square kilometres.

Declared a Wildlife Sanctuary in 1996, Panidehing is a sanctuary not just for its diverse flora and fauna, but also for the weary city dweller's soul. Here, the air is alive with the melodious cacophony of aquatic birds, each note blending harmoniously into the vibrant tapestry of life. Adjutant storks glide gracefully above, fishing eagles survey their domain with fierce focus, and colourful ducks add splashes of life to the serene waters. In this haven, nature offers an escape from the chaos of urban life, inviting you to immerse in its captivating beauty!

A paradise for bird-lovers

The Paniheding Wildlife Sanctuary is a natural haven where 165 species of birds flit and flutter about, painting the skies with their colourful feathers. As you wander through this enchanting realm, you’ll encounter the Bar-headed Goose gliding effortlessly, the Grey Leg Goose standing proud, and the Spot-billed Duck splashing joyfully in the water. Keep your eyes peeled for the Mallard and the elegant Gadwall, or perhaps the charming Wigeon and Gargany. The Shoveller, with its magnificent bill, is sure to steal the show, along with the captivating Red-crested Pochard and the Common Pochard.

But as you explore further, you might just spot the grand Adjutant Stork and its companion, the Lesser Adjutant Stork, poised like sentinels watching over the wetlands. The mysterious Open-billed Stork and the striking White-necked Stork are ready to awe all who lay eyes on them!

And if you think the excitement ends there, think again! This thriving habitat was once home to the great Indian one-horned rhinoceros and majestic tigers, prowling through the underbrush like the kings of the wild. Today, you can find wild elephants roaming majestically, playful hog deer, rhesus monkeys swinging in the trees, and otters frolicking in the water. So, pack your binoculars and get ready for an adventure filled with nature’s splendour!
