The village of anthills

Across the serene plains of Anantapur lies Puttaparthi, a charming town with a unique spiritual energy. This special place is closely associated with the revered spiritual leader Sathya Sai Baba, as it is believed to be the place where he was born. Once known as Gollapalli, or the "village of cowherds", an interesting legend tells of a disgruntled serpent's curse that led to the town's name change to Puttaparthi, meaning "the township that sprang from anthills". The town's journey to prominence began with the establishment of Prasanthi Nilayam Ashram, a place of ultimate peace, which serves as a living testament to Baba’s teachings of love and service.

A glimpse of the divine

When you enter Puttaparthi through the Gopuram archway, you will immediately feel a sense of calm in the air. It's as if the entire town is in a state of meditation. The gentle flow of the Chitravathi River adds to the sanctity of the town, bearing witness to its spiritual tales. The Prasanthi Nilayam Ashram, also known as the 'abode of peace,' serves as the spiritual heart of Puttaparthi. The ashram beautifully combines spirituality and nature, and the daily rituals and gatherings are not just ceremonies but a profound expression of devotion that will deeply resonate with your soul.

The Chaitanya Jyoti Museum offers a glimpse into Baba’s miraculous life, while the Sri Sathya Sai Space Theatre (Planetarium) bridges science and spirituality, showcasing the universe through a spiritual lens. Spend some moments at the Samadhi shrine, which is the final resting place of Sri Sathya Sai Baba and unravel his teachings. The Satyabhama temple is close by if you want to visit and marvel at the architecture of Lord Krishna and his consort.
