The guardian of Kanniyakumari’s shores

Standing tall along the coastline of Kanniyakumari, Tamil Nadu, a towering monument entices you to come and marvel at its grandeur. A towering symbol of Tamil culture and literary excellence that commands attention even from afar.

Behold the Thiruvalluvar Statue, a magnificent sight against the backdrop of the deep blue sky and the sparkling sea. It pays homage to Thiruvalluvar, the revered Tamil poet and scholar renowned for his masterpiece, the 'Tirukkural.' Since the statue is about 400 metres away from the mainland, you can reach it via ferry services.

Crafted by the skilled hands of Indian sculptor V. Ganapathi Sthapathi, the Thiruvalluvar Statue's foundation was laid by then Prime Minister Morarji Desai in 1979. However, the installation and sculpting process did not begin until 1990, with construction being completed in 1999. It was inaugurated by the then Chief Minister of the Tamil Nadu state, Dr. M. Karunanidhi, on January 1, 2000.

When you lay your eyes on this magnificent sculpture, you'll be struck with awe by the profound symbolism reflected in its architecture. The waist of the Thiruvalluvar Statue is slightly bent, like Nataraja, the dancing pose of Lord Shiva. Surrounding the statue's majestic pedestal is the ornate Alankara Mandapam, a hall adorned with artistic motifs. Ten elephant statues stand sentinel, symbolising the ten directions given by King Dashratha to his charioteer.

The masterpiece of 500 sculptors

The Thiruvalluvar Statue stands proudly at a total height of 133 feet, symbolising the 133 chapters of Tirukkural. The statue stands 95 feet tall and represents the total number of chapters in the Porul (70 chapters) and Inbam (25 chapters) sections. Meanwhile, the pedestal has a height of 38 feet, corresponding to the number of chapters in the Aram section. 140 steps inside the Mandapa lead to Thiruvalluvar's holy feet. Around 500 sculptors impressively engaged in its construction, and the stone used for this statue was sourced from Pattumala Kuppam, Sirudhamoor, and Ambasamudram hills. This stone sculpture has been designed to withstand natural calamities such as earthquakes.
