Fern-covered fantastical falls

Born from a mountain stream cascading over multiple tiers, carving through the lush, forested slope; a network of railed walkways starting from the top of the falls and down to the base; the refreshing mist and the resounding roar at the foot of the falls−everything about the Elephant Falls in Shillong is an invitation to dip into its crystal-clear aqua and capture a memorable photo with the majestic waterfall as your backdrop.

Originally known as Kshaid-Lai-Pateng in the Khasi language, referring to the three distinct levels of its descent, the present name was given by the British after an elephant-shaped rock here, which was lost to an earthquake over a century ago.

Each tier of the Elephant Falls will offer you a distinct experience of nature's artistry. The first cascade exemplifies a horsetail-punchbowl waterfall. It is broad in form and veiled by surrounding trees. Contrasting this, the second fall appears subdued, particularly during the winter and drier seasons. However, it's the third and tallest descent that steals the show, revealing itself suddenly with a breathtaking display of magical water dropping over a sea of uniquely shaped rocks. The waterfall's edges are lush green, blessed with an abundance of ferns.

Come, wade into the depths of this scenic landscape!

What’s beyond?

Shillong is called the Scotland of the East for not one but many reasons. From scenic places to spiritual centers, there is everything here for your weary soul.

Experience Laitlum Canyons by climbing its lush meadows and cloud-clad summits for an unforgettable hiking retreat.
