The Archaeological Museum, originally housed in the Kollengode Palace in 1938, has now found its home in the historic Shakthan Thampuran Palace in Thrissur. The museum houses a collection that spans the prehistoric period from the 9th century AD to 9th century BC. Among its treasures are antiques, bronze sculptures like Vettakkorumakan and Vishnumaya, and stone sculptures of deities such as Buddha, Mahavishnu, and Ganapathi. The archaeological park on the premises features relics from the Megalithic Age, including original menhirs, Kudakkallu (umbrella stones), burial urns, and capstones, offering an insight into ancient practices and traditions.
The museum also hosts galleries dedicated to numismatics, arms, and the history of Kochi. Highlights include utensils used by the King of Kochi and a display of the royal horse wagon, adding a regal touch to the exhibits. Visitors can explore the preserved rooms once used by Rama Varma Sakthan Thampuran, offering a personal glimpse into the lives of Kerala’s royalty. The gardens within the palace grounds house the tombs of prominent figures like Samutiri and Sakthan Thampuran.
