A fascinating dam. A great picnic spot.

Just 32 kilometres from Kerala's beloved hill station, Munnar, lies an idyllic spot amidst verdant tea plantations and evergreen forests.

This is the famed Anayirankal Dam, an architectural masterpiece constructed during India's concrete age in the 1960s. The name "Anayirankal "is derived from "Aana," meaning elephant, and "irangal," meaning descend—hence evoking images of elephants quenching their thirst here. Fascinatingly, you can observe elephants enjoying the refreshing water of the crystal-clear lake; the sight of them playing is sure to be a delight for all ages. You may even spot bisons and wild boars around the area!

Adjacent to the dam, a pristine lake and sprawling tea plantations enhance the reservoir's beauty like a jade-green carpet, captivating its visitors. You can indulge in memorable boat rides in the beautiful reservoir, go for a revitalising stroll through the plantations, or even enjoy a wholesome picnic on the banks with family and friends.

Besides a fantastic getaway at Anayirankal, Munnar has many more attractions. For instance, visit the Eravikulam National Park to witness Anamudi Peak, a 9,000-foot mountain offering a great experience for adventure seekers and nature enthusiasts. You can also venture to Cheeyappara Waterfall, easily accessible via National Highway 49, with seven-tiered cascades. Don't forget to visit the Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary near the border between Tamil Nadu and Kerala. It is known for its wildlife diversity, climate patterns, and challenging terrain, attracting trekkers across India.
