Discover Karnataka's temple paradise

As you step into the historic village of Lakkundi, located southeast of Gadag in Karnataka, you discover an unparalleled landscape of ancient temples and architecture. Once known as ‘Lokki Gundi’, this village was a prominent city over a thousand years ago. Today, it holds a treasure of antiquarian interest, boasting over 50 ancient temples, 101 stepwells, and numerous inscriptions that tell stories of dynasties like the Chalukyas, Kalachuris, Seunas, and Hoysalas.

Timeless temples of divine craftsmanship

The Kasi Vishwanatha Temple is the crown jewel of Lakkundi, celebrated for its ornate architecture with elaborately carved details. Every inch of this masterpiece reflects the architectural brilliance of the Kalyani Chalukyas, bridging the styles of the early Chalukyas of Badami and the Hoysalas. Beyond the Hindu temples, Lakkundi is an important Jain centre, with a grand Jain temple dedicated to Mahavira. It is among the largest and oldest in Lakkundi.

A stroll through historical and ingenious waterworks

Lakkundi isn’t just about temples; it’s also famed for its stepwells, or Kalyanis, architectural marvels in their own right. These wells are adorned with small canopied niches enshrining lingas, blending utility with artistic beauty. Don’t miss the inscriptions scattered throughout the village, offering fascinating insights into Lakkundi’s past.
