There’s something for everyone at NGMA

The National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA) in Bengaluru is a beautiful walk through India’s culture and art history. Housed in Manikyavelu Mansion on Palace Road, surrounded by majestic trees, fountains, and a tranquil pool, this heritage building, spread across 3.5 acres, was transformed into a gallery and opened to the public on 18th February 2009. The elegant mansion matches seamlessly with the additional gallery block, which adds a modern touch to it, while maintaining the aesthetics of the original architecture, creating the perfect setting with 2,800 square metres of display area.

As one of only three NGMAs in India (the others are in Delhi and Mumbai), this gallery is run by the Ministry of Culture, Government of India. It stands as a proud repository of the country’s cultural ethos, exhibiting Indian art from the early 18th century to the present day. You can admire a wide range of works, including paintings, sculptures, graphic prints, and early photography that trace the historical development of modern art in India. Highlights include Indian miniatures, works by colonial artists, celebrated pieces from the Bengal School, and creations by post-independence artists who pioneered contemporary modern and postmodern art. But that’s not all! NGMA also hosts regular national and international exhibitions, ensuring there’s always something new and exciting on display.

Educational programmes and activities

NGMA Bengaluru is a lively hub for creativity and learning. The gallery buzzes with exciting educational programmes and activities for all ages - families, students, and art enthusiasts. From workshops and talks by renowned speakers to film screenings and hands-on activities, there’s always something happening here to spark your imagination and deepen your appreciation for art. School children can enjoy tailored programmes filled with grade-specific activities, while families can take part in graffiti and painting contests, or guided gallery walks every Wednesday and Saturday. If you prefer a more personalised experience, the museum also offers custom tours for specific groups.

Internship

NGMA offers internship opportunities to students, at graduate and post-graduate levels, interested in contempoirary art, culture, and museum studies. The internship programme provides hands-on experience in the operations of a national art institute and for work in the preservation and promotion of India’s cultural heritage.
