A lake shaped like a woman

Nestled high in the serene Sirmour district of Himachal Pradesh is a breathtaking gem that beckons adventurers and nature lovers alike. Perched at 672 meters above sea level and surrounded by the lush green embrace of the Indian Himalayas, Renuka Lake is an enchanting lake that stretches over 2.5 kilometres, offering a perfect escape for those seeking tranquillity and excitement. The lake is not only a paradise for boating and fishing enthusiasts, but it also serves as a thrilling base for trekking and mountaineering.

Named after the goddess Renuka and recognized as a Ramsar site since November 2005, this lake is shaped like a woman's profile, stretching gracefully across a circumference of 2.5 km. It is also the largest lake in Himachal Pradesh!

Fed by pristine underground springs, this tranquil oasis is surrounded by lush forests that pulse with vibrant plant and animal life. Its natural beauty is truly breathtaking, making it the perfect year-round escape that beckons you for a peaceful retreat.

The poignant tale of a sorrowful sacrifice

According to ancient tales, Renuka Lake holds a sacred place in the hearts of the devout as the legendary birthplace of Parashurama, the formidable sixth avatar of Lord Vishnu. This enchanting site is intertwined with the lives of Maharishi Jamadagni and his devoted wife, Renuka, who are said to have immersed themselves in deep meditation atop a mystical hillock known as Tape Ka Tiba, overlooking the serene Renuka Lake. It is here, blessed by the mighty Shiva, that Vishnu is believed to have graced the world as their beloved son.

But the story takes a poignant turn. After the untimely death of Jamadagni, who steadfastly refused to relinquish the divine cow Kamadhenu, Renuka's heart shattered with grief. Legend has it that, overwhelmed by sorrow, she leapt into the shimmering waters of the lake, embracing her fate. In a mesmerising transformation, the lake took on her essence, becoming known as the Renuka Lake - a tribute to her spirit and sacrifice.
