Be one with nature
As you begin your ascent from Lakkar Mandi, Dalhousie, you’ll be greeted by the tall and beautiful Deodar trees, calm forests and green valleys adorned with fields of colourful blooms. Slowly, you’ll realise why people are so fond of this place. While you continue your trek past misty clouds and meandering hills, be prepared to be charmed by picturesque views of quaint mud houses in the nearby villages. What will make your journey even more fruitful are the two major attractions that you will come across while climbing this hill. One is the Indian Air Force Base and the other is the Pholani Devi Temple. One of the most interesting facts about this temple is that there is no idol of a deity, except for a trident inside the temple premises. For the ones who are unable to trek all the way up, there is a motorable road that leads to this hill top. For the rest there are no excuses to miss an experience of a lifetime.
Of legends and folklores
Mountains and folklores go together don’t you agree? There’s something mystical about such destinations that inspire a rich narrative steeped in legends and mysteries. Dainkund is no different. Its name itself is highly intriguing. Literally meaning ‘The pond of witch/witches’, it immediately piques the interest of any curious mind. Catch hold of an enthusiastic local who will gladly take you through the folklore behind its name. The other story goes that as you trek through this majestic hill, if you listen carefully, the cold breeze passing through the trees creates a melody that can stir the heart and soul. Which is why it’s also called the ‘Singing Hills’.
