Home of the Famous Sirimanothsavam Festival

Located in the heart of Vizianagaram town, the Sri Pydithalli Ammavari Temple is one of the most deeply revered Shakti temples in North Andhra Pradesh. Despite being modest in its size, the temple holds immense emotional, cultural, and spiritual significance especially during the world-famous Sirimanothsavam, a once-a-year festival that turns the entire town into a moving procession of faith, drawing lakhs of devotees who believe the goddess herself blesses the people through the sacred Sirimanu, transforming the entire town into a sea of devotion. For locals, this temple is the spiritual heartbeat of Vizianagaram.

The Legend of Goddess Pydithalli Ammavaru

According to local tradition and puranic belief, the presiding deity Pydithalli Ammavaru is associated with Pydimamba, a noble woman of the Vizianagaram royal lineage and the sister of King Vijaya Rama Raju of the Gajapati dynasty.

During the historic Battle of Bobbili (1757), Pydimamba is believed to have foreseen the tragic outcome through divine intuition and urged her brother to avoid war. When news of his death reached her, she is said to have given up her life in grief. Later, she appeared in the dream of a soldier, instructing him to locate her idol near the western side of a lake and build a temple there.

Following this divine message, the temple was constructed near Pedda Cheruvu (the large lake), where it stands to this day, watching over the town and its people.

Temple Setting & Deity

The temple is situated close to Vizianagaram’s bustling market area, making it easily accessible for devotees and visitors. Architecturally simple yet spiritually powerful, the temple features:

  • A small garbhagriha (sanctum)
  • A spacious mandapam
  • A traditional gopuram

The deity is always covered with turmeric and fresh flowers, symbolizing purity, protection, and motherly grace. Tuesdays are considered especially auspicious, drawing steady crowds throughout the year.

Sirimanothsavam – Vizianagaram’s Grand Spiritual Celebration

The highlight of both the temple and the town is the legendary Sirimanothsavam, also known as Pydithalli Ammavari Jatara. Celebrated every year on the first Tuesday after Vijayadashami (Dussehra), it is one of the largest and most unique religious festivals in Andhra Pradesh.

During this time, 2–3 lakh devotees gather from Vizianagaram and surrounding districts.

The focal point of the festival is the Sirimanu a tall, sacred wooden pole ceremonially prepared and carried through the streets. A specially chosen priest sits atop the Sirimanu, believed to channel the blessings of the goddess and offer divine guidance to devotees below.

Traditionally, members of the Vizianagaram royal family lineage oversee the ritual, maintaining centuries-old customs. The procession, rhythmic chants, drum beats, and collective devotion create an atmosphere that is both spiritually charged and culturally unforgettable.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit is during Sirimanothsavam (October), when Vizianagaram comes alive with devotion, rituals, and cultural energy. For a quieter, more relaxed visit, weekdays outside festival months especially between February and June are ideal.
