Into the wild

Amidst the modern bustling township of Guntur lies a bird sanctuary where nature finds its voice. The Uppalapadu Bird Sanctuary, decorated with vibrant feathers and quiet landscapes, invites visitors to experience a diverse range of birds and the whispers of the wind. Known far and wide, this sanctuary represents the wonders of nature. Established in the year 1976, this beautiful sanctuary nurtures a rich habitat for both migratory and resident bird species.

The Uppalapadu Bird Sanctuary is a renowned tourist spot known for its abundant bird population and panoramic surroundings. It serves as a popular weekend destination and a favoured picnic spot for local tourists and nearby settlements in Amaravati, Andhra Pradesh.

A glimpse of Pelican majesty

Within the green and peaceful surroundings, a remarkable sight awaits. This sanctuary offers a rare chance to witness the elegant pelicans in the sky with their majestic presence. Such encounters are a rarity in India, and this makes Uppalapadu truly special. Along with Pelicans, a diverse species of birds find comfort within the calm environment of this sanctuary. From the stately black-headed ibises to the elegant common teals and pintail ducks, the air of this sanctuary vibrates with their songs and flight.

A haven of migration

As the seasons shift, Uppalapadu becomes a refuge for voyagers with feathers. Thousands of birds, seeking rest from distant lands like Serbia and Australia, dignify this sanctuary between September and February. Uppalapadu emerges as Asia's sanctuary for painted storks during the migratory peak. These majestic birds find shelter within its lush confines, painting the skies with their vibrant cluster. There was a time when Uppalapadu used to shelter around 12,000 birds but according to recent observations around 7,000 birds find their shelter at this place. Nonetheless, several initiatives have been undertaken, including the installation of artificial trees, raising local awareness, and ensuring proper water supply to the ponds. These artificial trees have been positioned within the ponds, providing extra perching spots for the feathered creatures alongside the existing natural trees.
