A Temple Town of Towering Gopurams and Sacred Serenity

Nestled in the tranquil countryside of Andhra Pradesh’s Kakinada district, Golala Mamidada—also known as Gollala Mamidada or G. Mamidada—is a distinctive temple town renowned for its awe-inspiring gopurams and serene spiritual atmosphere. Set amid lush mango groves and located on the banks of the sacred Tulyabhaga River, this pilgrimage centre seamlessly blends traditional devotion with striking modern temple architecture.

The town is best known for its two monumental temples—the Kodandarama Temple and the Sri Suryanarayana Swamy Temple—whose soaring towers have transformed Mamidada into a landmark destination for devotees, architecture enthusiasts, and spiritual travellers alike.

A Legacy Rooted in Faith and Landscape

The name “Mamidada” translates to “big mango garden,” a reflection of the region’s fertile past and agrarian roots. Over time, the town evolved into a prominent religious hub in the East Godavari region, drawing pilgrims seeking divine blessings in a peaceful, less-crowded setting compared to larger temple cities.

Sacred Architecture That Touches the Sky

The Kodandarama Temple stands as the crown jewel of Mamidada. Its west-facing gopuram rises to an extraordinary height of approximately 210 feet across 11 storeys, while the east gopuram reaches about 170 feet with 9 storeys. Adorned with elaborate carvings depicting scenes from the Ramayana, Bhagavad Gita, and other Hindu epics, the temple is celebrated not only for its scale but also for its artistic depth. One of its most intriguing features is the mirrored first floor, designed with optical illusions that leave visitors spellbound.

Complementing this is the Sri Suryanarayana Swamy Temple, dedicated to the Sun God. Bathed in natural light and surrounded by calm landscapes, the temple holds special significance for devotees seeking vitality, clarity, and spiritual renewal.

Spiritual Significance & Devotional Experience

Mamidada is revered as a space where devotion meets innovation. The temples incorporate traditional South Indian architectural principles while embracing modern engineering, including glass enclosures for silver idols and advanced structural techniques within the towering gopurams. The atmosphere is marked by rhythmic chants, temple bells, and a deep sense of reverence that resonates throughout the complex.
