Birds, birds everywhere…

Birds have a calming and mesmerizing effect on people. Just gazing at them, resplendent in their myriad colours and shapes, is said to work like balm. Now imagine scores of birds perched in countless corners of a lush mangrove! That’s Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary, an estuarine mangrove habitat−and thus a cozy home of birds. You can find it on Chorão Island, sitting at the end where the Mandovi River meets the sea in Goa. It's named after the ‘Birdman of India’, ornithologist Sálim Moizuddin Abdul Ali.

To get here, you can hop on a ferry from Ribander to Chorão. The sanctuary is small, just 1.8 square kilometers, but the species here are eclectic and varied.

The boat-way to heaven

Don't anticipate an ordinary bird sanctuary when you venture into this haven. Maybe small, but its endless charm lies in the boat journey through marshy mangroves, where the gentle breeze sways and birds flit gracefully from branch to branch, offering fleeting glimpses of their beauty. The birds will hold your attention well, but if you do get distracted, it will be for the twisted, winding barks and leaves that have created their very own art.

Lots of different birds live in the sanctuary, like the striated heron and western reef heron. Sometimes, you can spot other birds there too, like the little bittern, black bittern, red knot, jack snipe, and pied avocet when they stop by on sandy banks.

Besides birds, the sanctuary is home to mudskippers, fiddler crabs, and other creatures that love living in mangroves. A species of crustacean, Teleotanais indianis, has also been found here.

As the boat winds down the stream, you will feel the sun shimmering down on the water. Keep a close look. Sometimes you might spot a fish or two just slithering away to their regular lives.

Step away & ride away

You can hire a bike and ride through the winding lanes of this island. The greenery, occasionally interrupted by small ponds, feels almost utopic. There are a lot of small churches that you can visit. A few moments in the presence of divine will lighten your head and your heart.

The island also has a few very quaint, home-serviced eateries that are ready with authentic Goan fish thalis. You can indulge in one and then walk off the extra calories while gazing at the idyllic village life around you.

As the sun sets over the tranquil waters of the Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary, nature's symphony echoes through the mangroves, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in the serene beauty of this avian haven.
