The ancient capital of the Jethwa dynasty

Get ready to uncover the hidden gems of Ghumli, a captivating village just 42 kilometres from the coastal town of Porbandar. This enchanting destination beckons you with its rich heritage and ancient mysteries, recognised for its remarkable archaeological ruins. As one of the prime tourist destinations in the region, Ghumli offers you a unique journey into a fascinating past that dates back to the 8th century, when it served as the capital of the Saindhava dynasty.

Once known as Bhumli, this village later became the second capital under Rana Shiyaji of the Jethwa dynasty in the 12th century. As you wander through the remnants of this historical site, you’ll feel the echoes of a storied past, eager to share its secrets with you. Thanks to the dedicated efforts of the Archaeological Survey of India and the Government of India, this once-forgotten town is witnessing a renaissance, restoring its former grandeur for all to admire.

Ghumli’s stunning spiritual gem

Among Ghumli’s treasures is the majestic Navlakha Temple, a stunning edifice built in the 12th century by the visionary Jethwa rulers. This temple, dedicated to Lord Surya, proudly holds the title of the oldest Sun Temple in Gujarat. Its architecture, a breathtaking example of the Solanki style, features the enchanting entwining tusks of three elephants - truly a signature mark of this remarkable structure. In honour of its impressive construction, which cost an astonishing nine lakh, the temple was aptly named Navlakha Temple, inviting you to step back in time and explore its sacred beauty.

Explore the village and discover more

Just outside the magnificent main temple lies the Ghumli Ganesh Temple, dedicated to Lord Ganesh. This intriguing site dates back to the 10th century AD and carries a rich history, having faced destruction during the fierce battles of the 14th century. Legend has it that Jadeja Jam Barmaniyaji, seeking to avenge his father’s defeat, targeted Ghumli in 1313, adding a layer of drama to this sacred space.

Venture a little further east of the Navlakha temple, and you’ll discover the stunning step wells, Vikai Vav and Jetha Vav. The Vikai Vav, built by the Jethwa ruler Vikiaji, is not just the oldest but also one of the largest step wells in Gujarat, measuring an impressive 60 by 40.5 sq. m. As you explore, you’ll be captivated by the numerous flights of steps adorned with intricate carvings and the grandeur of the entrance pavilions still standing proudly at three locations.
