Discover wilderness near the coast of Gujarat

As you approach the rugged hills, a little away from the city of Porbandar, you will enter the Barda Wildlife Sanctuary, spread over 192.31 square kilometres, relatively small but abundant in floral diversity, consisting of a good number of medicinal plants. Be prepared to step into a world where rare plants thrive and ancient ecosystems endure. The state government implemented the 'Gir-Barda Project' in 1979 to develop Barda as a second home for the Asiatic lion.

A botanical haven like no other

Step into the sanctuary to find yourself amidst an astounding variety of trees, plants, and flowers that thrive in its unique microclimate. From towering teak trees to the fragrant Kadam and Banyan, the sanctuary’s forests are a living example of biodiversity. Medicinal plants like Guggal and Ashwagandha can be found, offering a glimpse into nature’s pharmacy. Even the undergrowth is alive with grasses, creepers, and shrubs that play a vital role in sustaining this ecosystem.

Where flora nurtures fauna

The rich vegetation of Barda Hills provides a nurturing habitat for a variety of wildlife. Hyenas, and jackals roam the hills, while the sambar deer and chinkara graze under the forest’s canopy. The sanctuary is also a birdwatcher’s paradise, with over 200 bird species living in the trees, including peafowls, partridges, and various migratory birds. But the true star here is the symbiotic relationship between flora and fauna, a delicate balance that ensures the sanctuary’s survival.

An eco-explorer’s dream come true

For those seeking adventure, Barda Hills offers trekking trails that wind through its varied terrain. Climb its rocky outcrops and explore hidden valleys where nature thrives. Each step reveals something new - perhaps a cluster of rare orchids or a medicinal herb you’ve only read about. A fascinating highlight is the massive teak tree, the living giant of Bhadra, that stands tall at 32 metres with a 5.1 metres girth and is estimated to be over 400 years old.

Explore beyond Barda

After exploring the sanctuary, visit Porbandar, the birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi, to explore landmarks like Kirti Mandir and Sudama Temple. Bask on the golden sands of Madhavpur Beach, or take a short trip to Jamnagar’s Marine National Park to see the marine biodiversity of Gujarat. Don’t miss Harsiddhi Mata Temple, located on top of a hill offering sweeping views. Junagadh's ancient monuments and the Girnar Hill temples, though slightly farther are definitely worth a trip to add a touch of heritage to your itinerary.
