A living treasure of Assam

Deep in the heart of Assam, Jorhat stands as a captivating oasis, where vibrant greenery meets a tapestry of rich historical heritage. Among its many treasures, the Botanical Gardens stand out as a sanctuary not just for plant enthusiasts but for anyone enchanted by nature’s wonders.

Established in 1969 as part of the Assam Agricultural University, this lush haven serves as both a vital centre for researching the region’s diverse flora and a stunning backdrop for those seeking tranquillity. With a commitment to preserving Assam’s remarkable biodiversity, these gardens have blossomed into a vibrant hub for education, conservation, and leisurely exploration.

Come and explore the beauty of these gardens, where every corner reveals a new delight waiting to be discovered!

Blooming with beauty

As you roam through the thick foliage of Botanical Gardens in Jorhat, you will be embraced by the incredible diversity of plant life. The teeming plant species, including both indigenous and exotic varieties, will stun your senses. This diversity is a reflection of Assam’s unique geographical location, which places it at the crossroads of the Indo-Burmese and Indo-Malayan biogeographical regions.

The gardens are meticulously organised into different sections, each dedicated to specific types of plants. You can explore sections devoted to medicinal plants, ornamental plants, and rare species. The medicinal plant section is particularly noteworthy, showcasing a wide range of plants traditionally used in Ayurvedic medicine. These include well-known species like Neem and Tulsi, as well as lesser-known plants that are indigenous to the region.

Ornamental plants, too, find a place of pride in the gardens. The vibrant colours of seasonal flowers, the intricate patterns of ferns, and the delicate beauty of orchids create a visual feast for visitors. Assam is known for its orchids, and the Botanical Gardens in Jorhat have an impressive collection of these exquisite flowers. The foxtail orchid is one of the highlights, attracting orchid enthusiasts from all over the country.

Preserving nature's legacy

In a time when environmental degradation and habitat loss are significant concerns, the gardens serve as a sanctuary for many endangered and threatened species. If you venture deeper, you’ll find designated areas where native plants are allowed to grow and thrive in conditions that closely resemble their natural environment.

You will also come across several greenhouses and nurseries where rare and endangered plants are propagated. These facilities are crucial for the survival of species that are at risk of extinction in the wild. What’s even more fascinating is that the gardens are part of seed bank initiatives, where rare plant seeds are collected and stored for future use in restoration projects!
