A Slice Of Peace

Gushing down swiftly in between the dense forests and various animals, in the district of Adilabad is the majestic Kuntala Waterfalls. With the peaceful setting of trees around, rocky terrain and birds chirping, this is the highest waterfall in the state of Telangana with a height of 147 feet.

Set on the Kadam River, the waterfall initially originates from a meeting point of ponds that eventually lead to the Kadam River. Falling on two beautiful steps the waterfall feels like an elixir cascading down and flowing constantly.

Surrounded by lush greenery and pristine natural beauty, Kuntala Waterfalls is a haven for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike. It offers a serene retreat from the hustle and bustle of city life. The constant noise of water falling at Kuntala beckons you, adding more magic to its unbounded beauty and making it worth travelling 260 kilometres, a journey of 6 hours from Hyderabad and stepping down 100 naturally carved rock stairs.

Submerged In Folklore And Traditions

Set in the land of tribals, Kuntala has its share of history. The history of Kuntala Waterfalls dates back centuries, with evidence of human habitation in the area dating back to ancient times. The falls have been mentioned in various historical texts and are believed to have been a popular retreat for royalty and nobility.

Coming from the country's biggest epic Mahabharata, the waterfall is said to have its name from King Dushyant's wife Shakuntala. It is believed that the queen while visiting her husband, was awestruck by the beauty of the waterfall and stopped there to take a bath and spent some quality time to find herself making it a practice to bath here hence the waterfall was acknowledged by her name "Shakuntala" which later was adapted as "Kuntala."

Kuntala also has great importance in the tribal culture. It is believed that the surrounding tribals, who are now lesser in number used to pay their immense respect to the Waterfalls and pray to the waterfall for their betterment and their good fortune. Moreover, the waterfall is also believed to be a centre of celebration for the tribals.

The Epitome Of Love And Boundlessness

The waterfall is also a romantic space, not just because of its picturesque but because of the local folklore attached to it. The story is of Kuntala Falls' own Romeo and Juliet who loved each other immensely and were from rival tribes that hated each other. But the lovers found solace under the majestic waterfall and when the world fought this flowing water supported their love.

It goes to show how just a stream falling from stones can play such majestic roles in creating beautiful histories that remain with us for all time and for generations to come.

A Beauty To Behold

With its amazing history, the waterfall has a lot to offer but this time not to the heart but to the senses. The waterfall in its beautiful setting captivates the vision of your eyes. It does it so well that one visit can keep you stuck to it.

The water hitting the steps and creating beautiful sounds adds purity to one's soul in between the green trees, which are home to leopards, deer and a lot many animals. Further, it creates a sense of belonging in an abandoned place, making tourists calm and rejoice in this beautiful place where the water looks like falling milk and stories that take the listeners into the world of folktales, making them experience pure bliss.

When the rain pours, Kuntala grows in size and ferocity, so much so that the two steps on which it cascades end up becoming two different waterfalls with a humongous flow of water from river Kadam.

The green on trees, especially highlighted in rain, contrasts beautifully with the falling white of the water amidst dark clouds which makes it a perfect moment that ends up becoming the apple of one's eyes and so pretty that nothing else feels or looks better than the highest waterfall in the state of Telangana.

Adding to the emotion and mood are the small snack shops around that serve hot food in cold-hitting rains, making one feel no less than a Bollywood lead and adding the perfect zing of flavour to the trip. All this truly makes the waterfall a whole package of good food, great stories and the best view.
