A glimpse into history
Built in the 17th century by the visionary Shivappa Nayaka of the Keladi Nayaka dynasty, Bekal Fort, carries whispers of a time when every stone had a purpose—to protect and defend. Its towering walls and strategic vantage points were once crucial in keeping invaders at bay, with the Arabian Sea serving as both a natural barrier and a lookout point.
You can feel the energy of generations past as you step onto the ancient grounds. Each stone, each loophole in the wall, speaks of a time when battles were fought, and kingdoms changed hands. Over the centuries, the fort passed through the hands of powerful rulers—Tipu Sultan, with his dreams of an impenetrable empire, and later, the British, who reshaped the fort to suit their colonial agenda.
Today, Bekal Fort has evolved far beyond its military origins. Its dramatic silhouette against the Arabian Sea has captured the imagination of filmmakers and tourists alike. A favourite location for movies and advertisements, Bekal has become a canvas for creativity, blending antiquity with modern-day allure. And it's not just a local treasure anymore—Bekal is one of the five spots chosen by the Government of India to be developed into a 'Special Tourism Area.' History, films, or adventure – Bekal offers the perfect blend of past and present, ready for you to explore.
A Fort that rises from the sea
Bekal Fort seems almost inseparable from the sea it guards. Standing a proud 130 feet above the crashing waves, this 40-acre fortress is an awe-inspiring sight where sagas from the past and nature converge. Three-quarters of its perimeter is embraced by the Arabian Sea, creating a surreal experience as you stand amidst the symphony of waves and gaze at the endless horizon. The dark maroon laterite stones of the fort add to its imposing presence, while the polygonal design speaks of its strategic brilliance. Its towering ramparts and bastions once served as strongholds against naval attacks, but today, they offer picture-perfect views of the coastline.
As you wander through Bekal Fort, one feature demands attention: a solitary bastion extending defiantly into the sea, as if daring the waves to come closer. The fort also boasts an observation tower built by Tipu Sultan, accessible via broad steps and offering panoramic vistas of nearby towns like Kanhangad, Pallikkara, and Uduma. From this vantage point, you’ll appreciate the fort’s historic role in monitoring the sea and ensuring its defences, while today, it provides a peaceful moment to enjoy the untamed beauty of the landscape.
