Unlock hidden stories

Established in 1996, the Vadnagar Museum beautifully displays Gujarat’s cultural and historical roots . The museum consists of three main galleries - the Vadnagar Gallery, the Saraswat Mandal Gallery, and the North Gujarat Handicrafts Gallery. The museum has nearly 147 exhibits, including sculptures of Ganesh, Shiva, Parvati, Mahishasura Mardini, Brahma, Vishnu, and Buddha. You can also see copper plates from Patan and textile works, highlighting the artistic traditions of North Gujarat.

Walk through centuries of art and culture

You will find a collection of terracotta figurines, ancient tools, and pottery inside the museum that highlight the craftsmanship of past civilisations. The detailed carvings on stone sculptures and temple relics provide an insight into the artistic traditions of different periods. The museum also exhibits old manuscripts and copper plates, which help piece together the town’s historical importance, each offering a glimpse into the lives of those who once lived here.

A legacy of Buddhism and trade

One of the most fascinating sections of the museum is dedicated to Vadnagar’s Buddhist history. Excavations have uncovered remains of monasteries, indicating that the town was once a centre for Buddhist learning and pilgrimage. The museum also highlights Vadnagar’s role in ancient trade routes, displaying coins and seals that suggest commercial exchanges with regions as far as Central Asia. The town’s continuity through various dynasties makes it a unique example of a living heritage site.
